NRL ROUND 14

CANBERRA RAIDERS VS BRISBANE BRONCOS

SATURDAY JUNE 12, 7.35 PM, GIO STADIUM, CANBERRA

Saturday night in Canberra promises to be interesting, and freezing, as the Raiders take on the Broncos, both clubs have been through a hellish last month or so at least and would love a win, in what will probably be a scrappy game.  Canberra were top 4 contenders and legitimate at the start of the year, but are now 4-8 and only 13th, after their result in round 12 was a belting from their old rivals the Chooks.  Brisbane have proven that 2020 was not an aberration, and are in a world of pain, on and off the field right now, with a 3-10 record, following a terrible thumping from the Dragons last Friday, when again a team put 50 points on them.  Wind and at times snow have made it horrible conditions in southern NSW this week, though the weather appears to be improving a little in time for this game, where still cold conditions await, albeit in front of what should be a decent crowd.

Aekins is out for Canberra, meaning Simonsson must fill in at fullback, and Valemei returns on the wing, which should certainly get the attention of Kelly to bomb frequently.  Papali’i is the big in for Canberra, having served his suspension, while Tapine returns to the bench, after recovering from a knee injury, while Wighton should be fine to back up from Origin.  An incredible story is forming at the Broncos, if this move from Walters is going to be noticeable, as Karmichael Hunt is back in the NRL for the first time in 12 years, starting in the halves, with Albert Kelly.  Haas and Coates are likely to play, though if Haas is ruled out Riki probably plays, and Mead is the logical addition if Coates is out.  The other noteworthy change for Brisbane, is the exclusion of Isakko, as Walters has handed fullback duties over to Herbie Farnworth.

Canberra are searching for a 3rd straight win against Brisbane, for the first time since both clubs were forces back in the mid 1990’s, and last season saw Canberra obliterate the Broncos 36-8.  As mentioned, the Raiders have suffered through a poor stretch, to the extent that now they are only $3 chances of playing the Finals, while Brisbane are worse off and $31 in that market, and 2nd favourites to finish last, ahead of only Canterbury.  Canberra are favourites to conjure a win here, as $1.36 favourites, with margin markets suggesting they are 8 points better than Brisbane, who are $3.20 chances of coming home with a rare win.

PREDICITON: Brisbane can trouble Sticky’s men, but perhaps the Raiders have enough to win here by 10.

BETTING TIP: $2.80 is ok odds for the Raiders to win by 1-12.
