NRL ROUND 14

CRONULLA SHARKS VS PENRITH PANTHERS

FRIDAY JUNE 11, 7.55 PM, NETSTRATA JUBILLE STADIUM, KOGARAH

A jubilant bunch of Panthers is becoming an all too familiar sight, as their large class of Origin players celebrated more than most in NSW’s dominant win against Queensland in Origin, leaving Cronulla with plenty of fears coming into this game.  Cronulla are starting to show some life, after a horrid month, that included their coach’s dismissal, and are now 4-8, 10th after their demolition of Gold Coast, 38-10 in round 12.  Penrith suffered their first defeat of the season last weekend, without their 7 Origin stars, against Wests, losing 26-6, and will be out to set the record straight, and maintain top position, which they hold by 2 points currently.  Good winter conditions await in Kogarah, and no doubt a biggish crowd will be out to see the stars on show in this game, that is almost certainly a must-win for Cronulla if they hope to find a place in the top 8.

Despite having bunches of players close to returning, from suspension and injury, Cronulla at this stage have just 1 change from the squad that was miles too good for Gold Coast.  That is the inclusion of Andrew Fifita on the bench, ahead of Magoulis, in what looks to be a strong squad.  Penrith are playing the wait and see game with their Origin stars, and while the likes of Cleary and Luai got face cuts, odds are they will play, and the squad will look nothing like it does on paper now, as they are boasting 6 reserves, all of whom may get the nod.  Leota returns from suspension, meaning Leniu will play from the bench as per normal, when Penrith are at full-strength.

Just a month ago Penrith met Cronulla, and demolished them 48-0, but anything can happen in this game, and if Penrith stars are ruled out after the trip to Townsville, Cronulla are a chance at upsetting them like the Tigers did last weekend.  Penrith are $2.80 favourites to win the NRL, and given the form they are displaying, that is justified, if all players are at their disposal, whereas Cronulla are battling to make the 8, as their $5.50 odds indicate.  Penrith are $1.44 favourites to beat Cronulla here, with the Sharks at $2.80 and +5.5 in the handicap market, suggesting it could be a tough ask for the Panthers to back up, following the highs of a historic Origin triumph.

PREDICTION: Penrith too good, win by 10.

BETTING TIP: $2.80 is nice odds for Penrith to win by 1-12.
