AFL ROUND 13

NORTH MELBOURNE KANGAROOS VS GWS GIANTS

SUNDAY JUNE 13, 3.20 PM, BLUNDSTONE ARENA, HOBART

Hobart gets a treat on Sunday as the Kangaroos have transferred another of their home games, in this case forced by Covid, away from Melbourne, but will be up against it to get a result, as they meet the Giants who have shown enough to suggest they are top 8 contenders, so far in 2021.  The Roos have just 1 win on their lean season to date, and were beaten by 20 against St Kilda in round 11, before having their bye last weekend, leaving them still dead last.  The Giants also had a bye, at an opportune time, to reflect on a poor performance against the Lions, the week before, and are 5-6, in need of a win to get closer to the top 8 bubble.  Cool and showery conditions are forecast in Hobart for this game, which is usually well supported when the Roos travel to Tasmania.

North Melbourne are adding plenty of experience to the squad, that was not good enough to match the Saints, as Robbie Tarrant, Jaidyn Stephenson and Tristan Xerri all return, and Menadue, Taylor and Campbell are not selected.  Tarrant moves straight into his customary halfback role, while Stephenson starts across half forward and Xerri will add depth and versatility from the bench.  Big names returning for the Giants include, de Boer, Toby Greene and Adam Kennedy, while Stein also gets a gig, though out of that group only Greene will start at forward pocket.  Brown, Riccardi, Buntine, O’Halloran and Sproule are all on the outer, even after some of them performed recently, and not part of this squad.

North Melbourne provided a major upset last time these clubs met, by defeating the Giants by 20 points back in June of 2020, while last time the Giants won was in June 2019 by 23 points.  The Giants are still a good chance at $2.60 to qualify for the top 8, and play Finals footy, whereas the Kangaroos are no hope, and will do exceptionally well to avoid a wooden spoon.  GWS are strong favourites to win here, at $1.30 and -21.5 in the handicap margin market, while the Kangaroos are $3.60 hopes of claiming just their 2nd win of a poor season to date.

PREDICTION: GWS too good, they win by 20+.

BETTING TIP: Double your money by saying the Giants win by 1-39.
