AFL ROUND 13

SYDNEY SWANS VS HAWTHORN HAWKS

FRIDAY JUNE 11, 7.50 PM, SYDNEY CRICKET GROUND

Round 13 of the AFL continues of Friday evening as the highly touted Swans tackle the lowly Hawks in Sydney, in a game that can consolidate them in the top 8, or could it be that Hawthorn begin a resurgence, after a terrible start to season 2021?  The Hawks are 2-9 and enduring one of their worst starts a season in their modern history, which is illustrious, they had round 12 off, after a smashing against the Gold Coast the weer prior, by 37 points.  Sydney, meanwhile, held off the Saints to win by 9 points last weekend, at this venue, and are now 6th with an unprecedented 8 wins and 4 losses following a troublesome 2020.  Wind will play a role in this game, at the smallish SCG, but it will be nice to see a decent crowd, after games between non-Sydney teams at this venue recently, have been quite barren.

Sydney are settled with their line-up after showing good form throughout this season, and have just one injury, from the team last week, being Warner, who is not fit to take the field in this clash.  Hawthorn are boosted by the return of star midfielder Jaegar O’Meara, after injury has kept him out of the last couple of games; he is joined in the inclusions list by Jai Newcombe who debuts on the bench, straight from the mid-season draft, where the Hawks selected him with their 2nd pick.  Newcombe is a nuggety type midfielder, from the local Box Hill Hawks club; the other new face in the Hawks team for this game is Day, who will start across halfback.  Greaves, Cousins and Morris did not impress enough last week to keep their places, while Lewis is injured in a fresh injury blow to the battling club.

Sydney managed a 7-point victory last season against the Hawks, but generally speaking, games between these clubs have been tight in recent years, as the 2 prior to that were margins of 19 to Sydney and Hawthorn by 9.  Hawthorn are 2nd favourite to win the title no one wants, that of team with most losses, with odds of $3.75, currently ahead of only North Melbourne, while the Swans are solid $1.28 odds to participate in the Finals this year.  Sydney are $1.18 favourites to defeat the Hawks in this game, with the brown and yellows at $5, and a handicap margin that says Sydney will win by 30+.

PREDICTION: Sydney win by a comfortable margin of 20+.

BETTING TIP: $2.05 for the Swans to win by 1-39 is the popular market for this fixture.
